The United Kingdom (UK) has always been one of the most popular destinations for international students. Every year, thousands of students from countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and others move to the UK to pursue higher education. The UK offers high-quality degrees, a safe multicultural environment, and excellent job opportunities after graduation.
But from 2026 onwards, the UK government is introducing some big changes to the study visa and post-study work (Graduate Route). These changes will directly affect how international students apply for visas, how long they can stay, and what level of English they will need to qualify for work visas later.
As a trusted educational consultancy, Career Advisers is here to explain everything in simple and clear English, so you can understand exactly what’s changing and how to prepare for it.
One of the biggest changes announced is the increase in the English language level for visa applicants.
Starting from 8 January 2026, all applicants applying under most visa categories—including work routes such as Skilled Worker, Scale-Up, or High Potential Individual—will need to show English language proficiency at Level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) scale.
Currently, the requirement for most students is Level B1, but this is going to change gradually.
If your current IELTS UKVI score is 5.5 overall, you will likely need to improve to 6.0–6.5 overall to meet B2 standards.

The Graduate Route Visa, also known as the Post-Study Work Visa, allows international students to stay and work in the UK after completing their degree.
Currently, the rules allow:
However, from 1 January 2027, this rule will change.
The UK Home Office plans to reduce the post-study work duration from 2 years to 18 months for most non-PhD graduates.

Another significant update is the increase in financial maintenance requirements.
From the academic year 2025-26, international students must show higher proof of funds to cover living expenses in the UK.
Here’s what you will need to show in your bank statement:
If you’re studying outside London, you’ll need to show at least:
£1,171 × 9 = £10,539 for living + your tuition fees.
Additionally, visa application fees and CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) costs are also expected to increase slightly.

The UK government’s new immigration plan, called “Restoring Control Over the Immigration System,” aims to balance opportunities for international students while reducing misuse of the visa system.
Here’s why these rules are changing:
